A Premier League tribunal has ruled that a top-flight club must pay £2.8 million in compensation following the move of a teenage winger between academy systems.

Rio Ngumoha left Chelsea’s academy in September 2024 to join Liverpool before signing his first professional deal a year later, prompting the independent ruling on compensation.

The decision was reached by the Professional Football Compensation Committee, which assessed the value of the player’s training and development after he switched clubs as a minor and later signed his first professional contract.

Tribunal sets base fee with add-ons possible

The tribunal has set a fixed base payment of £2.8m, reflecting Ngumoha’s development during his time at Chelsea.

That figure could rise through performance-related add-ons if specific conditions are met later in his career.

Chelsea will also receive 20 per cent of any future profits if Liverpool sell the winger, a clause designed to give long-term value rather than immediate impact.

Liverpool have not disclosed the length of Ngumoha’s first professional contract, but the ruling closes a compensation process that had remained unresolved since his move.

Rapid rise and pathway behind academy switch

Ngumoha has enjoyed a breakthrough season since joining Liverpool, making 13 appearances across all competitions under Arne Slot.

He announced himself in dramatic fashion on his Premier League debut in August, scoring a 100th-minute winner against Newcastle United to become the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history at 16 years and 361 days.

The winger also became the youngest player to start a match for the club when he featured in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley in January 2025.

An England Under-19 international, Ngumoha was regarded as one of the standout players in his age group at Chelsea, but opted to move after deciding Liverpool offered a clearer route to first-team football.

Chelsea had made assurances and proposed future contracts to retain him, but the teenager’s decision and the tribunal ruling that followed highlight the growing financial stakes in elite academy development.
