Free agent Sterling remains clubless despite Champions League eligibility

Raheem Sterling remains without a club after the January transfer window closed, despite still being eligible to feature in the Champions League knockout stages this season.

Sterling parted ways with Chelsea by mutual consent last week, ending a prolonged and increasingly inevitable separation. 

The 31-year-old had been frozen out of first-team plans as Chelsea continued to prioritise wage reduction and long-term squad restructuring, with Sterling’s reported £325,000-per-week salary unsustainable within the club’s new model.

With most elite squads already settled, Sterling now finds himself in limbo at a critical stage of his career.

Union Berlin did not see Sterling as a serious option

Since becoming a free agent, Sterling’s representatives have explored options across Europe. 

Among the clubs approached was Union Berlin, who remain in contention for European qualification in Germany.

Union’s managing director for professional football, Horst Heldt, confirmed the approach to Sky Germany but revealed the club chose not to pursue the deal.

“In every transfer window, you’re confronted with names that make you rub your eyes,” Heldt said. “In this case, it just wasn’t serious, so we didn’t move forward.”

That decision has further narrowed Sterling’s immediate options, despite UEFA regulations allowing limited squad changes ahead of the Champions League knockout phase.

A familiar warning from Jesse Lingard’s path

Sterling has not played a competitive match since May 2025, when he last featured for Arsenal during a short, unsuccessful loan spell. 

While that move briefly returned him to Champions League football, limited minutes meant it did little to restore his standing at the top level.

The longer Sterling remains inactive, the greater the risk his profile fades, which is a scenario that has played out before for high-profile England internationals.

Lingard eventually became a key figure in Asia, but only after a prolonged period away from elite European football and left the Seoul side in December.

Could Sterling make a return to the Premier League?

A return to the Premier League also remains plausible, with newly promoted sides like Leeds United potentially valuing his experience in a relegation battle.

Fulham pulled out of talks last week to sign the winger in favour of a £30m deal to sign Manchester City’s Oscar Bobb.

Sterling’s wage demands appear to still be a major blocker for any Premier League team outside of the traditional big six to seriously consider the former England player.

Clubs involved in Champions League play-off qualification, such as Atalanta or Benfica, could yet view Sterling as an experienced short-term solution. 

Having been previously linked to Napoli, talks would have to happen quickly to ensure the former Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal player is signed in time to play European minutes.
