Why Arne Slot already has Liverpool fans dreaming of seventh Champions League heaven

After being crowned champions of England for the 18th time in 1990, staggeringly it took Liverpool another 30 years before they were back on their perch.

That seismic moment finally arrived in 2020 when Jurgen Klopp delivered the club’s first Premier League title, nearly five years after he was appointed.

Arne Slot, in contrast, needed just one season to get the trophy under lock and key at Anfield.

That achievement capped an outstanding maiden campaign on Merseyside for the eloquent, articulate and coherent Dutchman.

It drew Liverpool level with bitter rivals Manchester United on 20 league titles apiece and there was much to be said for that.

Do not underestimate the pain it caused Liverpool fans to see United enjoy such serial successes under Sir Alex Ferguson.

During the legendary Scot’s 25-year reign, the Red Devils won an incredible 13 Premier League titles.

Since Ferguson retired in May 2013, United have not been champions and last season they suffered their worst league campaign for 50 years.

Do not overlook that either.

But Liverpool have far loftier aims these days than competing with a club still struggling to reinvent themselves in the post-Ferguson era.

For Slot and his men, top of the Premier League after four straight wins, attention now turns to the Champions League, a competition with which they have enjoyed a long-standing love affair.

Liverpool open their campaign at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, and their haul of six European Cups makes them by far the most successful British club in Europe’s premier competition.

And with the squad that Slot has at his disposal, hopes are high amongst supporters that Liverpool can win number seven this season.

UEFA Champions League trophy

The Reds created plenty of headlines this summer with a remarkable transfer window, setting multiple records in the space of just a few months.

They broke the British transfer record in June by signing Florian Wirtz for up to £116.5million, before surpassing that figure less than two months later with a £125million deal for Alexander Isak.

Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike, amongst others, also arrived.

By the end of deadline day, Liverpool had also set a new record for the highest total spend by a single club in one transfer window, with the figure reaching almost £450million.

So after winning the Premier League, it is time for some serious progress in the Champions League.

It will not be easy, and the tragic death of Diogo Jota will be felt amongst Slot’s players for some time.

Quite how it will affect them over the course of the season remains to be seen – but it could be a motivating force.

Slot’s side fell at the last-16 stage to eventual winners Paris St-Germain in last season’s Champions League.

There was no shame in that and now, armed with so many big-name signings, perhaps it is Liverpool’s time to reign supreme over Europe once again.

Their last Champions League success was in 2019 under Klopp, when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid.

Slot was chiselled from a slightly different stone to his German predecessor.

For a start he is a lot less emotional than Klopp, whose fist pumps and badge-thumping victory celebrations in front of the Kop so endeared him to Liverpool fans.

Slot, a calm, assured man, has already huge credit in the bank for what he achieved last term.

But with his team having already flexed their muscles in the opening weeks of the Premier League, Reds fans are already dreaming of a trip to the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.

On May 30, 2026, this season’s Champions League final will be played there.

Can Liverpool get there? You wouldn’t rule it out.

Not with the squad that Slot has assembled. And not with the history that Liverpool has with European football’s most famous trophy.
