Inter and Liverpool are two of Europe's most famous clubs, each with a rich history and reputation for winning a plethora of major trophies.

This week sees the two juggernauts go head-to-head in one of the Champions League's standout ties of Matchday six, each looking to bounce back from defeats in the previous round.

But who from the illustrious past of two of Italy's and England's elite clubs have played for both sides? DAZN News counts them down...

Paul Ince (Inter 1995-97, Liverpool 1997-99)

The first player to tread the boards at both clubs was former England midfielder and self-proclaimed 'Guv'nor' Ince.

Ince was part of the Manchester United clearout in 1995 that paved the way for the Class of '92 to step up into his place, with many surprised to see him leave Old Trafford.

He opted to move to Serie A, where he spent two seasons with Inter and became a big favourite with the Milan crowd.

Although he failed to land any silverware, he did help them to a UEFA Cup Final and was offered a new deal to stay at the club, but left for family reasons and moved to Merseyside.

Two seasons at Anfield followed, but he failed to find the same spark that helped United to Premier League glory and left for Middlesbrough in 1999.

Robbie Keane (Inter 2000-01, Liverpool 2008-09)

The Irish legend played for both Inter and Liverpool, but he'd be the first to admit neither club saw the best of the striker.

His move to Milan was somewhat of an eyebrow raiser in 2000. After just one season in the Premier League with Coventry, he moved to Serie A in a £13 million deal but it turned sour all too quickly when Marcello Lippi was replaced by Marco Tardelli.

Tardelli didn't see Keane as part of his plans and after just 14 games and 3 goals, he left for Leeds United.

After later starring for Tottenham, the striker then got his 'dream' move to Liverpool in 2008 under Rafa Benitez, but struggled to find the form that had seen him become a regular goalscorer in North London.

He lasted just half a season at Anfield, scoring seven goals before moving back to Spurs in the winter window.

Daniel Padelli (Liverpool 2007, Inter 2017-21)

Even the most ardent Liverpool fans may struggle to recall this name, who played just one game for the club during a loan spell in 2007.

The young keeper was drafted in by Rafa Benitez and became the first Italian to play for the club when he made his debut on the last day of the season against Charlton. He conceded two goals in the draw with the Addicks and by June returned to Sampdoria.

A decade and several Serie A moves later, Padelli ended up at Inter, where he played nine games in a four-year stint as back-up goalie and was part of the squad that won the title in 2021.

Mario Balotelli (Inter 2007-10, Liverpool 2014-16)

The controversial career of Mario Balotelli began with Inter as a teenager after signing for the club as a sixteen-year-old, where he quickly became seen as one of Italy’s best young players.

He netted seven times in his first season as he helped Inter win Serie A and then scored and converted a spotkick in the 2008 Supercoppa Italiana win.

However, the first signs of Balotelli’s disciplinary issues soon came to the forefront when he was involved in a series of issues with boss Jose Mourinho, which ultimately led to his departure from Milan in 2010 as he joined Manchester City.

Four years on, and after a colourful time in Manchester, Balotelli rocked up on Merseyside to try and help fill the void left by Luis Suarez. Yet, the forward never really found his best form at Liverpool and, after just four goals in his first season, was farmed out on loan to AC Milan before leaving for Ligue 1 side Nice.

A player who seems to have popped up at several different clubs over the years, Moses enjoyed loan spells on Merseyside and in Milan while still a Chelsea player.

The Nigerian spent the 2013-14 campaign with the Reds, playing 22 games and scoring twice under Brendan Rodgers, but was largely kept out of the side thanks to the form of a young Raheem Sterling.

A further loan spell in Milan followed in January 2020, as Moses joined Ashley Young and Christian Eriksen as winter recruits for the club. He played 12 games and helped the side reach the 2020 Europa League Final.

Philippe Coutinho (Inter 2010-12, Liverpool 2012-18)

The Brazilian, who’s still going strong with Vasco da Gama this season, started his career with Inter as an 18-year-old in 2010, making his debut in the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid.

However, he struggled for game time at the San Siro and, after a loan spell with Espanyol, left the club after three seasons to join Liverpool.

In six seasons at Anfield, the playmaker blossomed and became an integral part of the 2014 side under Brendan Rodgers that went close to winning the Premier League title.

The following year, he was included in the PFA Team of the Season and would go on to score 54 times in 201 games before a record-breaking £105 million move to Barcelona.

Xherdan Shaqiri (Inter 2014, Liverpool 2018-20)

The Swiss superstar was already an established European star when he signed for Inter in January 2015 from Bayern Munich. But his time in Milan was short-lived. The forward spent just six months in Italy, scoring three times in twenty games before moving to Stoke City that summer.

He’d spent three seasons with the Potters before moving to Liverpool and became a vital squad member under Jurgen Klopp in a spell that saw him win the Premier League, Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup with the Reds.
