The aerial threat of Mexico's Jiménez

With 45 goals in 126 appearances, veteran striker Raúl Jiménez should be the focal point of Mexico's attack at the World Cup.

Four of his nine goals for Fulham in 2025-26 were headers, and Mexico play with plenty of width in their 4-3-3 formation.

In a team that scores plenty from set pieces, and given South Africa should be on the back foot, consider taking a punt on Jiménez to score with his head in the opener.

Mexico vs. South Africa: a card-fest?

Mexico midfielder Érik Lira came up with two nuggets recently.

First, he said, "Anyone who wants to come to the Azteca and win is going to leave dead."

Then, he followed up with, "I’m another soldier ready for war.”

It doesn't exactly sound like the Mexicans will be going in soft.

Mexico have received at least one yellow card in each of their last 22 games, while the South Africans have a similar record stretching back to 16 of their last competitive games.

With the pressure to win as one of the tournament hosts in an opener with a global audience, referee Wilton Sampaio's average of 5.08 yellow cards per match could increase in this one.

Odds correct as of June 10, 2026. Recommended bets are advised to over-18s.
