The WTA Tour heads to Rome this week as the top players on the circuit face off in the 2022 Internazionali BNP d'Italia, also known as the Italian Open.
Once again Canada's top two women's players are in the main draw, as Bianca Andreescu and Leylah Annie Fernandez continue their quest to break into the top 10 in the world.
Fernandez has a shorter path to to top 10, with the 19-year-old starting the month ranked 20th. The Montreal native was upset in the second round of last week's Madrid Open by Jil Teichmann of Switzerland, and her task gets no easier in Rome as she faces No. 15 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the opening round.
Meanwhile, Andreescu began May as the 111th-ranked player in the world but her injury-riddled 2020 and 2021 seasons are to blame for the low standing. A former world No. 4, Andreescu made short work of eighth-ranked Danielle Collins last week in Madrid before falling in the third round. Like her compatriot, the 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., also has a tough opening match on her hands in Rome as she's set to meet fellow U.S. Open winner Emma Raducanu in the first round.
