Bengals vs. Falcons in Madrid 2026: Date, time, storylines and matchups

The NFL is returning to Spain with two teams boasting an incredible array of star power.

In yet another reveal ahead of the full schedule release, the league has announced that the Atlanta Falcons will host the Cincinnati Bengals in a Week 9 showdown at Bernabéu Stadium. 

Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts will go head-to-head with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins in Madrid, in what promises to be a real edge-of-your-seat affair.

Here's what to expect, how to watch, and when to tune in.

One of the most iconic soccer venues in the world, the 83,186-capacity Bernabéu is home to Real Madrid.

The Bernabéu hosted its first regular-season NFL game last season, when the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Commanders 16-13.

In the US, the game will be broadcast on NFL Network and NFL+.

International broadcast details, including availability on DAZN to NFL Game Pass subscribers, will be confirmed closer to the date.

Two teams chasing a rebound

Neither of these franchises had a great 2025.

The Bengals went 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the third year running after talismanic quarterback Joe Burrow was sidelined for nine games with a toe injury.

Atlanta finished 8-9, their eighth consecutive losing season, despite showing real improvement in certain areas.

Both teams head into 2026 optimistic that they can improve and desperate to put on a show on the international stage in Spain.

New faces, new places

For the Falcons, there's a new leader on the sideline in two-time Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski, who joins after spending six seasons in Cleveland.

He hopes to bring his reputation as an offensive wizard to bear in Atlanta, teaming up with former Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to create a new-look Falcons' offense.

Retired quarterback Matt Ryan also returns to the place where his legend was born as he begins his tenure as the president of football operations.

The Falcons' 2026 draft class, including second-round cornerback Avieon Terrell and third-round wide receiver Zachariah Branch, could have worked their way into meaningful roles by the time this fixture rolls around.

While the Bengals coaching staff returns mainly intact, head coach Zac Taylor has a host of new players at his disposal in 2026.

Defensively, they've spent big in free agency, adding edge rusher Boye Mafe, veteran defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, and safety Bryan Cook.

The trade for three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was a major get, giving Cincinnati's defensive line a boost following the departure of Trey Hendrickson in free agency.

And rookie edge rusher Cashius Howell, cornerback Tacario Davis, and center Connor Lew also joined the Bengals in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Burrow's first international game, Bengals first win?

Burrow has never played an NFL game outside the United States, which feels like an oversight given his standing in the league.

The Bengals' London trips in 2016 and 2019 predate him entirely, and Cincinnati are still searching for their first international win.

Burrow is upbeat about the possibility of changing that narrative, telling reporters, "The faces look a little different, the bodies look a little different around here. The vibes are high.

"There's energy emanating throughout. You can feel it," he continued. "With the guys we have in here, we have everything we need."

Bengals vs. Falcons: Key matchups

Robinson vs. Bengals' run defense

Bijan Robinson was touted as a potential superstar when he entered the league as the Falcons' eighth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he's more than delivered on those expectations.

In 2025, he became a first-team All-Pro after dominating with 2,298 yards from scrimmage.

The Bengals' defense missed far too many tackles last season.

While that unit will look a little different this year, Robinson will be licking his lips at the prospect of showcasing his talent in a prime time slot against the Cincinnati defense.

Burrow, Chase, Higgins, Brown vs. Atlanta's defense

Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase have faced the Falcons exactly once. A Week 7 win in 2022.

Burrow threw for 481 yards that day, and two of his three passing touchdowns went to Chase. Atlanta won't be keen to revisit that one.

Chase is coming off his fifth Pro Bowl and is, at this point, the standard by which every other receiver gets measured.

Tee Higgins remains one of the better number twos in the league. Then there's Chase Brown, the Cincinnati running back who is coming off a career year, and who is - on his day - capable of punishing opponents who focus too heavily on stopping the Bengals' passing attack.

When this offense is in full flow, it's a real problem to contain.

Atlanta's secondary is no pushover, boasting talents such as A.J. Terrell Jr., Jessie Bates III, Xavier Watts, and they're now joined by safety Kyle Dugger and rookie Avieon - A.J.'s brother.

But what about the defensive front? Zach Harrison, Jalon Walker and James Pearce certainly look good on paper, but can they get the job done in Madrid?

The winner of this matchup will likely decide the game's outcome.

The QB question in Atlanta

There's still no settled answer at quarterback for the Falcons.

Tua Tagovailoa, the same Tua who started last year's Madrid game for the Dolphins, will battle Michael Penix for the starting job this summer.

Whoever wins that fight gets the Bernabéu in November.

Tagovailoa won last year's game in Spain, 16-13, but he struggled. Whether he gets the chance is another matter entirely.

Bengals vs. Falcons: Series record

Cincinnati leads the all-time series 10-5-0, and have extended their lead in recent years, beating the Falcons in all three meetings since Atlanta's last win in 2010.

The Falcons do have one international win, against the Jets in 2021 under Arthur Smith, but given the roster and coaching turnover, that's hardly a factor in this one.

Granted, these two teams haven't exactly set the league alight in recent years, but with the elite players on display and the expectation that they're starting to turn the corner, it's going to be unmissable.
