How Mendoza rose to the top

Fernando Mendoza started slowly. Coming out of South Florida, he was ranked the 140th best QB in the 2022 class.

Committing to Yale before flipping to Cal, where he redshirted in 2022, it was, by any measure, the kind of beginning that didn’t foreshadow what was to come.

Two so-so seasons with the Bears later, he headed to Indiana, and what followed was the stuff of legend.

In the perfect 16-0 season, Mendoza led the nation with a 90.3 QBR, throwing for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns, just six interceptions, while adding 444 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground.

The big moments matched the big numbers, too.

  • An 80-yard game-winning drive at Penn State.
  • A road win at Oregon.
  • The decisive touchdown run in the national title game against Miami.

That kind of CV is pretty impressive for a young man who few were interested in four years ago.

Mendoza's pro day clinic

Realistically, Mendoza would have gone No. 1 had he not even turned up. The fact that he dominated the session only added to his draw.

With all 32 NFL teams watching, the 22-year-old completed 53 of his 56 throws at Indiana's pro day, showing off his hallmark accuracy.

Mendoza worked extensively from under centre and weighed in at 236 pounds - 11 pounds heavier than he was at the Combine - suggesting he's already building the frame needed for the rigours of the pro level.

NFL Network's Rhett Lewis summed up the performance best, tweeting, "Everything about this dude screams QB1. Check all the boxes. Laminate the report. Turn in the card."

  • Championship pedigree

Where Mendoza needs work

  • Off-platform accuracy
  • Accuracy when facing pressure
  • Limited experience under center

Where will Mendoza get drafted?

Is there any question? The Las Vegas Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick, are desperate for a franchise quarterback, and have met with Mendoza three times already.

Even in the unlikely event that the Raiders trade the pick, the only reason another team would offer up a king's ransom to acquire the selection is to get Mendoza.

By all accounts, Las Vegas seem all in, and the feeling is mutual. Predictably, we have him going to the Raiders in our latest mock draft.

Come Thursday, April 23, live on DAZN, all the signs point to one outcome. Las Vegas calls his name, and a beaming Mendoza holds up the silver and black on the stage in Pittsburgh.
