Quarterback Geno Smith is thrilled to reunite with head coach Pete Carroll after receiving an extension from the Las Vegas Raiders.
"I'll run through a wall for him, and he knows that. I'll do the same for my teammates and for this organisation," Smith said during his introductory press conference. "I want that to be the statement of who I am as the quarterback of this team."
NFL insider Adam Shefter first reported details of Smith's extension.
Smith was drafted in the second round of the 2013 draft by the New York Jets and was initially regarded a "bust" after failing to meet his potential.
Signing with the Pete Caroll-led Seattle Seahawks in 2020 provided Smith with an opportunity to revive his career, and the quarterback took full advantage of his second chance by leading the team to a playoff berth two years later.
The Raiders' new quarterback is keen to repay Carroll's faith when so many others had written him off.
"I think there is unfinished business. When people think about my story, Coach Carroll was a big part of that. He gave me an opportunity when not many people would have."
Carroll embraced the reunion with the same enthusiasm.
"He knows how to bring out the best in our system because he'll stand for the competitiveness and the things that we believe in. It's just a great fit, and I'm so thrilled."
Smith's signing provides the Raiders offense with the stability they sorely lacked in 2024. The veteran will be tasked with reviving a unit which ranked 29th in points per game in 2024, and it's a challenge he relishes.
Flipping the script after a four-win season in 2024 won't be easy, but Smith and Carroll have a history of proving doubters wrong.
