The countdown to Super Bowl LIX is on, and tension is mounting as two of the NFL's most talented teams prepare to compete.
As fans and experts speculate about the winner between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, the conversation has often focused on the star players of both teams.
While Patrick Mahomes and Saquon Barkley dominate the headlines, the vital contributions of the other offensive players can sometimes be overlooked.
In this article, DAZN News comparesĀ the offensive position groups of bothĀ teams to determine which has the edge.
Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes
Eagles: Jalen Hurts
Hurts' decline in passing yards and touchdowns stems from missing games due to injury and the effectiveness of the Eagles' ground game.
He remains undeniably talented, and his threat as a runner creates problems for opposition defenses.
Still, Mahomes clearly has the edge here. The three-time Super Bowl winner and three-time Super Bowl MVP has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to elevate his game on the NFL's biggest stage.
Chiefs: Kareem Hunt, Isiah Pacheco, Samaje Perine
Eagles: Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, Kenneth Gainwell
Hunt enjoyed a bounce-back year and proved during the Chiefs' win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Conference Championship that he remains tough to tackle in open space.
Pacheco struggled with injuries in 2024 and has taken a backseat to Hunt but remains a dependable runner when called upon.
Barkley's performances in 2024 have been nothing short of phenomenal. HeĀ became only the eighth running back in history to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in the regular season.
Regardless of the Chiefs' superior depth, Barkley alone means the Eagles win this position group.
Chiefs: Xavier Worthy, Marquise Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, DeAndre Hopkins
Eagles: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson.
Worthy is an ascending talent who has become a keyĀ part of the Chiefs playoff run. A danger to score on any given play, expect the youngster to feature heavily in Super Bowl LIX.
Brown missed most of the season with a shoulder injury but has been a welcome and valuable addition to a depleted Chiefs' wide receiver group over the last month.
A combination of injuries and the effectiveness of the Eagles' ground game caused Brown and Smith to experience a decline in their 2024 receiving yardage.
Still, both Brown and Smith remain extremely talented components of the Eagles' aerial attack and can produce explosive plays when needed.
Chiefs: Travis Kelce, Noah Gray
Eagles: Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra
KelceĀ is in the twilight of his career and has not been as consistent in 2024 as he was in his younger years.
However, KelceĀ is still one of the best tight ends in the league, and his chemistry with Mahomes may mean he will beĀ heavily involved in Super Bowl LIX.Ā
Gray's involvement in the Chiefs' offense has decreased over the last month, but he is a capable backup who must be accounted for.
Like many of the Eagles' leading pass catchers, Dallas Goedert missed time due to injury in 2024. However, he can be a truly impactful player when he is healthy, as he has been throughout the playoffs.
Calcaterra's roleĀ has diminished, but he had some bright moments when called upon in Goedert's absence.
Chiefs: Joe Thuney (left tackle), Mike Caliendo (left guard), Creed Humphrey (center), Trey Smith (right guard), Jawaan Taylor (right tackle)
Eagles: Jordan Mailata (left tackle), Landon Dickerson (left guard), Cam Jurgens (center), Mekhi Becton (right guard), Lane Johnson (right tackle)
Thuney, Humphrey, and Trey Smith are arguably the best interior trio of offensive linemen on any NFL team. However, Thuney has moved to left tackle, and Caliendo, his replacement at guard, is a liability.
The Eagles' offensive line is one of the best in the league, led by Mailata, Johnson and Dickerson.
Still, Dickerson and Jurgens suffered injuries in the NFC Championship game, and their absence would seriously compromise theĀ interior of this offensive line.
The Eagles outscored the Chiefs by three categories to two because they boast superior position groups at running back, receivers, and offensive line.
However, these position groups are not weighted by importance, and theĀ Chiefs won arguably theĀ position most capable of influencing the outcome of Super Bowl LIX- the quarterback.
This resultĀ begsĀ the question, 'Can Patrick Mahomes elevate the Chiefs' offense to outscore the Eagles and win a record-breaking third consecutive Super Bowl.'
Look out for the defensive version of this article, where we'll explore the answer to that question in more detail.
