College Football lost a legend on Wednesday as Lou Holtz passed away at the age of 89 with his family by his side in Orlando, Florida.

Notre Dame, where Holtz made his name when he led them to a national championship in 1988, released a statement by the family on the passing.

Including Notre Dame, Holtz coached at six universities: William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, and South Carolina. Holtz's career record was 249-132-7 record. He made a pitstop in the NFL where Holtz coached in the NFL in 1976 when he went 3-10 as the head coach of the New York Jets.

But Notre Dame is where Holtz became a household name. In wanting to restore their historic tradition, Notre Dame hired Holtz in 1986.

Everything came together in year three for Holtz and the Irish. The final regular-season game saw Notre Dame beat No. 2 USC to move on play West Virginia for the National Championship. The Irish won the game 34-21 to take home college football's biggest prize.

"Lou's values have gone well beyond the football field," Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said in a statement. "He and his wife, Beth, are respected off campus for their generous hearts and commitment to carrying out Notre Dame's mission of being a force for good. On behalf of the Notre Dame football program, we send our love to Lou's family, friends and former players, wishing you all comfort and peace during this difficult time."
