While all eyes are on New Orleans for Sunday evening’s Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, the NFL news cycle has continued to churn out stories.
As the two teams prepared for the clash at the Superdome, news emerged that the New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers are set to part ways, as per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Rodgers’ future had been under the microscope in recent months, amid the Jets’ 5-12 season which saw them fire head coach Robert Saleh after just five games.
The team hired former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, who played as a cornerback for the Jets during his playing career, as their new head coach last month, with the matter of Rodgers’ future at the top of his agenda.
Rodgers played all 17 games for the Jets this season, throwing for 3.897 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
That came after his first season with the team ended on just his fourth play of the season, as he tore his Achilles in the 2023 season opener, following the Jets’ huge trade with the Green Bay Packers, where he has spent 18 seasons, winning Super Bowl XLV and picking up four NFL MVP awards.
Rodgers will turn 42 next season and the Jets decision appears to indicate that they are ready to move on and acquire a younger quarterback, either through the draft or free agency. Veteran Tyrod Taylor and rookie Jordan Travis are the only other quarterbacks currently on their roster.
For Rodgers, he now appears set for the open market and while there are several teams that need a new quarterback, his age means he would only be a bridge QB or short term option.
