Kyler Murray is one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the NFL. A true dual-threat, the diminutive 5'10" Murray is a threat as a passer and runner.

DAZN News takes a look at Murray's NFL journey so far and what lies ahead.

Where was Kyler Murray selected in the NFL Draft?

Despite being drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the ninth selection of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, Murray opted to pursue his football career.

The decision seemed justified when Murray became a first-team All-American as a junior in 2018 at Oklahoma, won the Heisman Trophy, and was named the Associated Press Player of the Year.

Expectations were sky-high as the 2019 NFL Draft approached, and he was selected first overall by the Arizona Cardinals.

NFL career so far

Murray had a bright start to his career, winning the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award after compiling 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns through the air, and 544 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Through the first three years of his career, Murray achieved several notable milestones. He became the first QB in franchise history to be named to the Pro Bowl twice in his first three seasons, the first player in NFL history with 3,500+ passing yards and 400+ rushing in each of his first three seasons, and the fifth-youngest player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career passing yards, at 24 years and 120 days.

The Cardinals reached the playoffs in 2021, playing the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card Round. Murray struggled in the first half and finished only 19 of 34 passing for 137 yards as Arizona lost 34-11.

After a dramatic contract standoff in 2022, Murray signed a five-year extension worth $230.5 million, which included $160 million in guarantees. At the time, the deal made him the second-highest paid player on a per-year basis.

After tearing his ACL in late 2022, Murray returned midway through 2023 and demonstrated a renewed sense of drive and commitment.

Career outlook

In recent years, the Cardinals have loaded up on young offensive weapons to help Murray and the team reach their potential.

Trey McBride, a 2022 second-round pick, enjoyed a breakout season in 2024, ranking second among all tight ends in receiving yards. Arizona also selected Marvin Harrison, the most coveted wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft, with the fourth overall selection.

After improving from a 4-13 record in 2023 to 8-9 in 2024, the re-tooled Cardinals offense is hopeful of reaching the playoffs for only the second time in Murray's career. It is a season that could define the 27-year-old's legacy.
