NFL insider Ian Rapoport has reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers could address their most significant offseason need by signing Justin Fields to an extension within the next few weeks.
"As of right now, based on my understanding, Justin Fields is more likely to be the starting quarterback of the Steelers than Russell Wilson", Rapoport said on Tuesday.
Fields began the 2024 season as the Steelers' starting quarterback, and despite throwing five touchdowns and rushing for five more, veteran Russell Wilson replaced him from Week 7 onward.
Re-signing Wilson remains an option, according to Rapoport, but as the free agency signing period on 12th March inches closer and closer, a deal to retain his services appears less likely to come to fruition.
The Steelers have the cap space to sign a quarterback in free agency, but despite reports that they were interested in acquiring Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, no trade materialised.
With Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford now off the market, the dwindling pool of quarterbacks available in free agency may hasten the Steelers' plans to ink Fields to a deal through at least 2025.
Fields is not nearly as accomplished as Wilson, Lawrence, or Stafford, but he would cost significantly less and allow the team to focus on other roster needs.
Despite disappointing early in his career, at only 25 years old, Fields would be keen to grasp any opportunity to prove he can still become the player the Chicago Bears envisaged when they selected him with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
