For one shocking night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this season, rookies Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo gave New York Giants' fans a glimpse of what could be a bright future.
The rookies led the Giants to a stunning 34-17 upset win over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football. Skattebo piled up 98 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, while Dart completed 17-of-25 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown, in addition to scrambling in for another score.
Altogether, Big Blue racked up 366 yards of total offense against an injury-depleted Eagles defense which was without the services of defensive tackle Jalen Carter (heel injury) and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell (hamstring).
As futile as the Eagles’ defense was, their offense was not much better as they punted three times to start the second half, while Jalen Hurts was intercepted on their next drive by Giants cornerback Cor’Dale Flott who ran it back 68 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the Eagles’ 23-yard line.
That set up the knockout punch as a few plays later had Skattebo rumbling into the end zone for the third time to extend the Giants’ lead to 34-17, which stood.
The Giants (2-4) went on to force a fumble on the Eagles’ next possession as they punched the ball loose from a rushing AJ Dillon.
Despite being a 7.5-point underdog at home, the Giants jumped out on the Eagles on Thursday night, finding the end zone on their first two drives during the first quarter via a heads-up 20-yard touchdown run from Dart followed by a 35-yard TD reception by Wan’Dale Robinson.
Even when the Eagles scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 17-13 lead in the second quarter, the Giants answered with a 15-play, 67-yard drive ending in a 4-yard touchdown rush by Skattebo to put Big Blue up 20-17 at halftime.
The Giants would extend that lead to 27-17 on the strength of a nine-play, 56-yard drive capped by Skattebo’s second rushing touchdown, before the bruising rookie rusher's third TD dropped the final hammer.
The Eagles (4-2), who have now lost two straight games for the first time this season, were shut out in the second half.
They will try to snap their losing skid in Week 7 when they visit the Minnesota Vikings.
Dart, Skattebo and the Giants head on the road to face the Denver Broncos in Week 7.
