Super Bowl LIX is so close you can almost touch it.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs meet on Sunday night in New Orleans to do battle for the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the title of world champions.

Hundreds of millions will be watching globally, from the most dedicated NFL obsessive to the casual viewer, so DAZN News has readied a crib sheet giving you all the information you need to know heading into the game…

A familiar match-up

If you feel like you’ve seen this one before, then that’s because Sunday night’s clash is a rematch of Super Bowl LXVII which was played two years ago. The Chiefs claimed a 38-35 win in a thrilling clash which was the third-highest scoring contest in Super Bowl history.

In fact, the Eagles were also involved in the second-highest scoring game when they beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in 2018, which could be a good sign that we’re headed for another shootout.

This will only be the 12th time the Chiefs and Eagles have ever met, with Kansas City holding a 6-5 advantage and this will be the ninth rematch in Super Bowl history.

Chiefs chasing history

The Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to do something no other NFL team has done in the Super Bowl era and win a third title in a row. Eight teams have won back-to-back titles, but none of those have then made it to a third Super Bowl in a row.

Should the Chiefs win, as well as landing this unprecedented ‘three-peat’, it would be their fifth Super Bowl win, joining the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers in third-place on the all-time standings, behind only the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, who both have six wins.

Philadelphia going for second title

The Eagles are in the Super Bowl for the fifth time and will be looking to add a second title to their Super Bowl LII win over the Patriots, a match which saw quarterback Nick Foles make a one-handed touchdown reception that went on to be known as the Philly Special’ and has gone down in history as one of the game’s iconic plays.

Patrick Mahomes looks to draw level with Joe Montana and close in on Brady

Even the most casual NFL fan will know all about Patrick Mahomes, as the 29-year-old Chiefs QB has transcended the sport and crossed into the mainstream.

Should he lead the Chiefs to victory in New Orleans, he will draw level with another of the sport’s icons in Joe Montana, who won four titles with the 49ers in the 1980s and would also match Steelers’ great Terry Bradshaw.

That would leave only Tom Brady ahead of him in the all-time standings. Brady finished his career with seven Super Bowl rings, the last of which came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a 43-year-old in 2021. If Mahomes has Brady’s staying power, you’d at least fancy him to match these achievements.

Saquon Barkley can shatter record

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley enjoyed one of the most productive regular seasons in NFL history when he became just the ninth player to rush for more than 2,000 yards.

And while winning a Super Bowl ring will be his ultimate aim on Sunday, he needs just 30 rushing yards to break the NFL season record for combined regular season and playoff rushing yards, which is currently held by former Denver Broncos star Terrell Davis, who had 2,476 yards on the way the Super Bowl XXXIV title.

New Orleans’ first Super Bowl since 2013 ‘Blackout Bowl’

It’s been 12 years since New Orleans hosted the Super Bowl, with the 2013 contest between the 49ers and Baltimore Ravens going down as the ‘Blackout Bowl’ after the power failed in the Superdome early in the third quarter, shortly after Beyonce’s half-time show.

The Big Easy has played host to ten Super Bowls and has served highlights such as William ‘The Refrigerator’ Perry’s one-yard touchdown dive for the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX, the 49ers record-breaking 55-10 win over the Broncos four years later, plus the first Patriots Super Bowl win in 2002 when a young Tom Brady began his assault on the record books.

Kendrick Lamar’s half-time show

The Super Bowl half-time show is always one of the biggest entertainment performances of the year and hip hop icon Kendrick Lamar has got the nod for this year’s performance.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper released his sixth album GNX last year and with a back catalogue filled with bangers, speculation is rife as to what his setlist will look like and what guest stars might appear. Probably not Drake is our guess.

Neither team will win many popularity contests

The neutrals might have a tricky time picking a winner on Sunday night, as neither the Chiefs or Eagles are many people’s second team.

There’s nothing like the continued success that a dynasty brings to inspire hatred among the rest of the league, meaning that the Chiefs now have a ‘villain’ tag that several players have addressed over the past fortnight, insisting it doesn’t bother them.

The Eagles’ reputation, meanwhile, have never really shaken off the 1968 ‘Santa Claus Game’ which saw Eagles fans, angered by their poor season, pelt Father Christmas with snowballs during a half-time parade.
