It’s that time of the year again, Super Bowl week, culminating in the big game on Sunday night.

This year’s edition will see the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks go head-to-head in a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX, and it presents plenty of intriguing storylines, making the NFL’s showpiece a must-watch.

Here, DAZN News rounds up the key storylines ahead of the kick-off at Levi Stadium.

Two Super Bowl debuts at quarterback

A lot of the attention in the build-up and during the game itself will be on the quarterbacks.

Drake Maye of the Patriots and Sam Darnold of the Seahawks are appearing in the big game for the first time in their careers, and they have been a thrill to watch under centre.

Maye, in just his second year, has managed to put himself in the running for this season’s MVP award.

Meanwhile, Darnold is one of the NFL’s redemption stories. After being tossed aside by numerous franchises, including the Minnesota Vikings last season, Darnold has paid back the Seahawks for believing in him.

His performance in the NFC Championship game win over the Los Angeles Rams was one of his best, throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns, and now he and Maye clash in a fascinating QB battle.

A British coach looks to make history with the Seahawks

One area of particular interest, specifically for NFL fans in the UK, is on the Seahawks sideline.

Defensive coordinator Aden Durde hails from London, and he has worked his way through the numerous coaching ranks before being hired by Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald in 2024.

Durde has made the Seahawks defense into one of the league’s most formidable units, and the 46-year-old is hoping he can become the first British-born coach to win a Super Bowl.

If Durde is standing on the podium with the Vince Lombardi trophy in his hands, he will be in the running for a head coaching job in the not-too-distant future, and his success will prove to those not based in the US that there is a path to the NFL that does not rely solely on playing ability.

Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to steal the show

If there is one player to keep an eye on this Sunday, it’s Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

The 23-year-old has been an enigma on offense, and in the regular season alone, he registered 1,793 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.

Njigba will be a crucial component for the Seahawks if they are to win on Sunday, with his ability to break tackles to pick up extra yards being something that some receivers often struggle to do successfully.

The Patriots' defense will have its work cut out, and they cannot allow Njigba to build up confidence early on. If he does, then there is a strong chance the Vince Lombardi trophy could be heading to Seattle.

Can the Patriots offensive line protect Maye?

A common sight for the Patriots this postseason has been Maye eating sacks.

In each of the three playoff games, Maye was sacked five times, which is simply too much ahead of a game of the Super Bowl’s magnitude.

His offensive line will need to do better against a fearsome Seahawks defense.

There is particular concern for rookie left tackle Will Campbell, who has been under serious pressure, allowing 11 pressures and three sacks.

If the Patriots are to give themselves the best chance of winning this Super Bowl, they will need to protect their quarterback and give him time to make plays. Relying on the defense to get out of trouble is not a viable strategy in the NFL’s biggest game.

Huge anticipation for Bad Bunny's halftime show

The Super Bowl halftime show is always a talking point, but with the current political climate in the US, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny will no doubt look to send a message on one of culture’s biggest stages.

According to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Bad Bunny’s performance will “unite” people, with an expected audience of 120 million expected to watch the game in the United States alone.

Bad Bunny’s performance will be kept under wraps until the game, but one thing is for sure; it will be one of the most anticipated in recent memory.
