Who is the lowest draft pick ever to win NFL MVP?

Every year, all 32 NFL teams embark upon a meticulous scouting process to run the rule over the best college prospects in hope of landing the league’s next superstar in the draft.

And while there are no guarantees that a standout college youngster will turn into an elite, All-Pro-level player at the professional level, teams with the top picks in the first round of the draft stand the best chance of selecting a franchise-changing star.

But that doesn’t mean that diamonds in the rough can’t be uncovered later in the draft. Many top players over the years were not heralded as high-potential players when they entered the NFL.

Some have even gone on to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

TomBrady SB51

The lowest-drafted player to win MVP in the last 40 years is none other than Tom Brady.

The New England Patriots icon is widely considered to be the greatest player in NFL history, yet he was the 199th pick in the 2000 draft after a modest college career with the University of Michigan.

He initially served as a back-up to first-choice quarterback Drew Bledsoe in New England. But when Bledsoe suffered a chest injury during the 2001 season, Brady took over and led the Patriots to a first Super Bowl triumph in Franchise history.

Brady went on to win five more Super Bowls with the Patriots before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 and claiming another title. He won the first of three MVP awards in 2007.

From indoor football to MVP glory

The lowest-drafted player ever to win MVP is also the only kicker ever to win the award.

When a player strike shortened the 1982 season, the Washington Redskins took advantage of a truncated schedule to win their first Super Bowl.

With no quarterbacks or players from the traditionally celebrated positions standing out that year, Washington placekicker Mark Moseley was named MVP.

It marked a remarkable rise for Mosely, who was the 346th pick in the 1970 draft and whose straight-on kicking technique had become outdated in favour of a soccer-style angled run-up.

There is one MVP, however, who was never drafted at all.

Kurt Warner, the star quarterback of the thrilling 2000 Super Bowl-winning St. Louis Rams team nicknamed “The Greatest Show of Turf”, was playing indoor football for the Iowa Barnstormers before signing for the Rams as a free agent in 1998.

Warner was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player twice, in 1999 and 2001, the only undrafted player ever to win the award.
