Washington, D.C., has been chosen to host the 2027 NFL draft, President Donald Trump announced from the Oval Office on Monday.
"I'm pleased to reveal that the 2027 NFL Draft will be held right here, in our nation's capital, Washington DC, on the National Mall.
"The draft is a celebration of one of our most cherished cultural institutions. Everyone in the world is going to be watching."
The Washington Commanders and local organiser, Events DC, will host the three-day event, turning iconic landmarks like the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue into a massive draft-day experience.
Joining President Trump and Commanders owner Josh Harris for the announcement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he thinks the 2027 draft could draw an even bigger crowd than the record-setting 750,000 fans attending the Detroit event in 2024.
"We believe we'll have well over a million people when we come here... the draft has become one of the great entertainment sports events."
Harris, clearly elated at the prospect of bringing the marquee event to the home of the team he purchased in 2023, added, "The draft is a powerful reminder of how sports bring people together -- and we're honoured to play a role in that."
This marks the second major announcement from the Commanders in just a week. On April 28, the franchise revealed plans for a massive $3.7 billion stadium to be built on the site of the old RFK Stadium in D.C.—their home from 1961 to 1996.
With the draft returning to D.C., a new stadium on the horizon, and momentum building on the field, the Commanders are enjoying a moment that signals a promising new chapter.
