Who is top 2025 NFL Draft prospect Shedeur Sanders?

Shedeur Sanders might not be the best prospect entering the 2025 NFL draft, but he is certainly the most famous.

That’s because the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback is the son of charismatic NFL legend Deion Sanders – who also just happened to be his coach at the college level.

A star cornerback who would also moonlight as a wide receiver and played baseball for the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and others during the NFL offseason, Sanders Sr is one of the most impressive athletes in the history of professional sports.

He is also – even still – one of the most outspoken figures in the American football landscape and a larger-than-life personality who generates widespread media coverage every time he opens his mouth.

All of which means that Shedeur – Deion’s youngest son – has grown up under an intense spotlight.

But Shedeur Sanders is more than just a nepo-baby thrust into contention for an NFL career because of his last name.

For much of the pre-draft process, Sanders has been considered one of the two best quarterbacks in the 2025 class, alongside Miami’s Cam Ward.

Last year, he was one of the most accurate passers in college football, with a completion percentage of 74 per cent. He also threw 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns, with just 10 interceptions, to lead unfancied Colorado to a 9-4 record.

Surprisingly, given his lineage, Sanders is not an especially impressive athlete. Standing 6ft 1, he is slightly shorter than the ideal frame for a quarterback. He is not a great threat with his feet, either, and he lacks the arm strength of the NFL’s elite ball slingers.

But Sanders is deadly accurate, has the intelligence to read and adjust to different defensive coverages and – after spending two years getting hit incessantly behind a leaky Buffaloes offensive live – is extremely tough.

Most analysts rate Sanders as a talent worthy of a late first-round or early second-round pick in the upcoming draft. Yet, owing to the desperate need a few teams have for a franchise quarterback, most mock drafts have him being picked as early as second overall (to the Cleveland Browns) or third (to the New York Giants).

Wherever he lands, Sanders will be one of the most fascinating figures to watch on draft night and throughout his rookie season.
