Bernard Hopkins explains why Jermell Charlo fight is pivotal for Canelo Alvarez's career

The two undisputed champions meet this weekend.

Former two-weight world champion Bernard Hopkins believes Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's upcoming fight with Jermell Charlo could determine whether the Mexican pound-for-pound star is on the decline.

Alvarez defends his undisputed super middleweight title this weekend against Charlo who holds all four world title belts at light middleweight this Saturday in Las Vegas.

But with Alvarez winning his last two fights on the judges' scorecards, some of those within the sport are beginning to wonder whether the 33-year-old has lost his mean streak and is on the decline.

With 63 fights as a professional under his belt, there was likely to be a point when Alvarez would begin to show signs of slowing down and Hopkins is expecting this upcoming meeting with Charlo to prove whether Alvarez is indeed not the man who cleaned up the super middleweight division in under a year.

“This here is really gonna test whether Canelo is declining or like fine wine, it gets better with time,” Hopkins told Little Giant Boxing.

“This fight will prove that one way or the other.”
