Bruce Carrington vs. Carlos Castro Keys to Victory: Breaking down tactics of each fighter

DAZN

Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington has been steadily working toward becoming a world champion and now that opportunity has arrived.

The Brooklyn, New York native can claim the vacant WBC featherweight title Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, and live on DAZN PPV, if he could beat battle-tested veteran Carlos Castro in their Ring VI matchup.

Carrington (16-0, 9 KOs) set up this opportunity with two dominant wins in 2025, first destroying Enrique Vivas via third-round TKO in March before outpointing Mateus Heita in a unanimous decision in July to earn the WBC interim title. Meanwhile, Castro (30-3, 14 KOs) lost to Stephen Fulton via split decision in September 2024 and was inactive in 2025.

Will this be the night to remember for Carrington as he coronates himself as a world champ? Or will Castro play spoiler and leave New York City with the crown himself? DAZN News analyzes the Keys to Victory in this championship fight.

Bruce Carrington’s Keys to Victory

Establish the jab

Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington has two inches of reach advantage that he should look to leverage in asserting a jab that he could pepper Carlos Castro with early and often.

The jab finding an early home will allow Carrington to establish a distance, dictate the pace of the fight and open up his offense further, making the stick an essential.

Make deposits to the body

Carrington does an excellent job stabbing to the body and loading up with piercing combinations to the midsection as well.

These shots could manage to slow Castro down and take steam off his pressure, forcing him to reset his offense each time.

Even when his jab is landing with regularity, Carrington ought to still make his deposits to the body to thwart Castro's forward fighting.

Get Castro’s timing down for sharp counterpunches

Castro makes very deliberate movements in the ring and often telegraphs his output.

That bodes well for Carrington who should look to deploy pointed counterpunches as his retorts. Enough of these counters landing flush and ‘Shu Shu’ can have his moment at MSG in style.

Carlos Castro’s Keys to Victory

Pressure Carrington off the jab

Carlos Castro has a piston-like jab that he steps into and lands with pop.

The shot could be used to not only score points, but pressure and force Bruce Carrington to back up.

The more Castro is able to accomplish the latter, the more successful he might be forward fighting and keeping his foot mashed on the gas pedal.

Take head off center line

Castro is willing to stand in the pocket and take a punch in hopes of landing a harder shot of his own.

He cannot afford to do this against a marksman like Carrington who will carve him up in a boxing clinic. Therefore, Castro must at the least take his head off the center line and show some head movement during this fight.

Leaving his head on the center line will spell a jab fest from Carrington and banking of rounds, making Castro’s chances to claim the vacant WBC featherweight title slim.

Do not get erratic pressuring in the pocket

It won’t take long for a sweet scientist like Carrington to clock Castro’s timing, especially if Castro facilitates by getting erratic in the pocket.

Castro swinging wildly will give Carrington the intel and space to answer with sharp counterpunchers.

To avoid this predicament, Castro must make a conscious attempt to keep his output compact while pressuring. Doing this could empower him to get the better of exchanges, strengthening his chances for the upset victory along the way.
