Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford - Who has the better record?

DAZN
Garcia & Canelo PPV Bundle - $90; £34.99; €39.99

The tantalising prospect of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford facing off in a reported money-spinning mega-fight in Las Vegas in September looms large.

The pair have long been touted for a potential match-up, as two of the pre-eminent pound-for-pound boxers in multiple weight classes over the past decade.

Unbeaten Crawford, 37, is tasked with jumping two weight classes to face Alvarez when they meet later this year as part of a Riyadh Season card set for Nevada.

But first Mexican superstar Alvarez, 34, must take on IBF champion William Scull in Riyadh on Saturday as he bids to become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs.

Here, DAZN News examines the glittering CVs of Alvarez and Crawford ahead of their much-anticipated bout in Sin City.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (62-2-2)

The legendary Mexican is one of the greatest fighters of his generation, having forged an extraordinary career over two decades.

He turned professional aged 15 and soon knocked out eleven of his first 13 opponents, all of whom were significantly older.

Key to his success has been the influence of head trainer Eddy Reynoso, a man who opts to not be in the spotlight whenever Alvarez laces up the gloves.

Working with his father Chepo, Reynoso and Alvarez’s first shot at a world title came in 2011.

Here he beat Matthew Hatton, the brother of British boxing legend Ricky Hatton, by unanimous decision to become the WBC world light middleweight champion at just 21.

Since beating Hatton, Alvarez has won world title belts at middleweight, super middleweight and even light heavyweight.

Reynoso and Alvarez have only suffered two losses in their boxing partnership; against the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol nine years later.

With 66 fights now under his belt, Alvarez’s achievements in the ring are testament to his enduring class and punching power.

Alvarez has seen off stellar names such as Gennadiy Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Jermell Charlo, and recently Jaime Munguia.

He has won world titles in four weight classes and became the first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the four-belt era.

Alvarez currently holds the unified WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight titles.

After this weekend’s clash with Scull, attention will turn to the looming fight with Crawford in Vegas later this year when Alvarez will bid to maintain his status as the dominant super middleweight figure.

Although he has not achieved a knockout since 2021, his boxing intelligence and enduring class have kept him as the boxing’s most relevant fighter at 168lbs.

Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford (41-0)

The unbeaten American made his professional debut in 2008 and is universally regarded as one of the greatest fighters of the past decade.

The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska native has enjoyed an outstanding professional career to date, winning world titles in four weight classes as well as the undisputed world championship at super-lightweight and welterweight.

Crawford has defeated an abundance of highly ranked fighters during his tenure, including the likes of Israil Madrimov, Errol Spence Jr and Shawn Porter.

He remains unbeaten through 41 outings, as he looks to see out the duration of his career without a single defeat.

Another American fighter who had a peerless career of his own is Floyd Mayweather Jr, who defeated all 50 of the opponents he faced whilst winning world titles in four weight classes along the way.

Crawford is already a two-division undisputed titleholder and will attempt to cause a major shock by defeating Alvarez and becoming the first ever three-division undisputed champion.

Crawford made his 154-pound debut last August when he dethroned WBA light-middleweight champion Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles.

Crawford won his fourth world title at different weights after beating Madrimov by unanimous decision to extend his unbeaten record to 41 fights.

Defeat was the first of Madrimov’s career and the fight was Crawford’s last outing.

Crawford would move up another two weight classes for the clash with Canelo, which is already being talked about as one of the biggest fights in boxing history.
