Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are set to do battle this year in a huge pound-for-pound clash , and it is a fight that has the entire boxing community split.
The bout appears set to take place on September 13 and it will see Crawford make a huge leap to super-middleweight to take on the Mexican icon and George Groves is the latest former pro to run the rule of this contest.
Since defeating Errol Spence in the summer of 2023 , Crawford has repeatedly made it clear that he wants to face Canelo, and he is likely to get his wish in just a few months.
The highest weight class Crawford has fought in is super-welterweight and he made a decent impression there when he defeated Israil Madrimov last year to become world champion.
Immediately after the fight, Canelo and Crawford came face to face to create a major buzz for their fight and it was the first time each fighter will have got a closer look at their next test.
George Groves, who once held a world title at super-middleweight, has delivered his verdict on the fight and what he believes will happen.
Despite many backing Crawford to be too skilful, Groves believes Canelo’s size will be a huge factor in deciding the outcome.
“I can’t see how Canelo can’t win. He’s had a lot of fights now but there doesn’t seem to be too many miles on the clock. Canelo is not a fighter who is finished and it’s a sort of catchweight fight with Terence Crawford moving up two divisions,” said Groves when speaking to Action Network .
“Canelo is not the tallest or the biggest super middleweight but has comfortably been there long enough that he has filled out now in that division. Crawford has only recently moved up and fought at super welterweight and is now moving up.
“I can’t see him putting any physical dent in Canelo. He’s an amazing fighter Crawford, he’s an astute, clever boxer who has almost every shot in the book. His balance is tremendous, but I think it is a step too far.”
