Chris Eubank Jr has laughed off suggestions he had suffered a broken jaw at the hands of Conor Benn – and admitted he is targeting a fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Eubank Jr narrowly beat Benn last Saturday as one of Britain’s fiercest and longest-running boxing rivalries lived up to the hype at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 35-year-old was then rushed to hospital after his unanimous decision victory before eventually being released on Monday.
Chris Eubank Sr dramatically revealed his son was “touch and go” after the fight and the injuries he sustained had left his life “in the balance”.
But Eubank Jr told Sky Sports: “Conor Benn and Eddie Hearn ran away with the story of a broken jaw, but there’s no broken jaw here.
“We are strong – our bones are dense – and when you’re in a fight like that you have to go to hospital to get tested and looked after.
“But I’m feeling good. I’m feeling grateful that the fight was so well received. I’m in a great place.”
Asked to sum up his overriding emotion after his victory, Eubank Jr replied: “I was content.
“When they were reading out the scores before they picked the winner, I was at peace with whatever happened and whatever came.
“I knew I had won the fight but I know in boxing that decisions can be wrong.
“But I thought to myself ‘if they don’t call out my name, I’m still proud of what I did in that ring’.
“And the people know who won, so proud and at peace.”
His Excellency Turki Alalshikh has suggested that Alvarez – who fights William Scull in Riyadh on Saturday night exclusively on DAZN PPV – could be a future opponent for Eubank Jr.
“That is another stadium-filler, absolutely,” enthused Eubank Jr.
“Wembley, Tottenham, any one of the large football stadiums in the UK would be filled for a fight like that.
“He is an opponent who I have been looking at for many years now and the fans would love to see that.
“So one hundred percent that is a name in my line of sight and we will be doing whatever we can to secure that fight in the future.”
Eubank Jr also refused to rule out the prospect of a rematch with Benn, adding with a smile: “Watch this space.
“Boxing is a very beautiful industry where anything can happen.
“The possibilities are endless and, if the rematch is meant to be, it will be.
“And if not, there are plenty of other amazing fights to be had and great things for me to achieve in this sport. I’m happy either way.”
