They inherited their fathers’ rivalry and made it their own with an explosive buildup toward an action-packed classic which ended with Chris Eubank Jr. defeating Conor Benn by unanimous decision in April.
On Saturday night, Eubank Jr. and Benn renew their rivalry, returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, and live, only on DAZN Pay-Per-View, for their highly-anticipated rematch.
The bigger man Eubank Jr. (35-3, 25 KOs) was able to use his size to piece together enough combinations to sway judges on the scorecards this past spring. Now, back with trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre in his corner, Eubank Jr. will look to make it a clean sweep over his rival. Meanwhile, Benn (23-1, 14 KOs), though suffering his first professional loss, had his moments where he hurt Eubank Jr. in their thrilling first fight. Plus, he believes he has filled into middleweight nicely heading into running it back with his fellow Brit.
Will Eubank Jr. end this rivalry with an emphatic victory? Or will Benn make the adjustments necessary to knot the series at 1-1, riding a wave of redemption? With the stakes high, DAZN News analyzes who has the edge between Eubank Jr. and Benn heading into this weekend’s rematch.
Though he was not always consistent with it in their first match, Chris Eubank Jr. likes to work behind a precise jab.
From there, he is able to translate that stick into pieced-together combinations from the orthodox stance, also possessing an uppercut used to thwart forward-fighting opponents.
His style will be up against an active, busy Conor Benn who often does his best work punching in traffic inside. If he can keep composed and pick his spots without getting overzealous or overextending from the orthodox stance, the sequel has a chance to dazzle over the original.
But until Benn is able to show just that, the slight advantage in this styles clash resides with Eubank Jr.
Though Eubank Jr. counts 25 knockout victories to his ledger to Benn’s 14, one could make the argument that the latter showed more power in their inaugural meeting. And Benn’s quicker hand speed might be the reason.
Though they both hurt each other over key moments in the fight, Benn briefly put Eubank Jr. on wobbly legs with a left hook to the temple in the third round and blasted him with a right hook across the jaw in the eighth.
Where Eubank Jr. was more imposing and pounding with his output, Benn was fiery with his and his hand speed was an undeniable factor.
It makes his power hit different, allowing him to eke this category out.
During Tuesday’s Grand Arrivals, Benn conceded that he’s “better prepared” for this rematch and has “filled into the weight nicely.”
He added: “I’m excited to do what we know I can do. I can hurt him. I’m going to go out there and capitalize on the mistakes he made in the first fight.”
It all sounds wonderful as the confidence is clearly there. But the mental warfare edge goes to Eubank Jr. for he already owns one victory over Benn and has managed to get into the head of his opponent over the course of their rivalry.
In addition, even as the victor, Eubank Jr. still made adjustments entering this rematch.
Reuniting with ‘BoMac’ has Eubank Jr. believing he can stop Benn in their sequel. Until Benn shows and proves otherwise with the adjustments he must make, Eubank Jr. enters with the mental advantage.
DAZN News has Eubank Jr. with a 2-1 edge, though it could very well be for Benn — it’s that close.
The bout could come down to Benn’s ability to keep his composure and pick his spots with discretion against Eubank’s ring savvy and need to be the bigger man with the more resonating shots.
Here comes round 13 of what could be another classic.
