NEW YORK — Conor Benn and Rolando Romero met on the red carpet for the Ring Awards in New York City on Friday, amicably in conversation over a potential clash this year.
There were less smiles all around when they met at ringside during The Ring 6 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night however, as both men came close to blows.
The pair were caught on camera in a near-scuffle, as they grappled with each other and butted foreheads in front of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh inside the New York City arena.
Though the confrontation ended in smiles as both men were kept apart, it stokes further suggestions that the pair could well meet at some point for a welterweight title bout. Rolly Romero and Conor Benn clash at ringside
Incumbent WBA champion Romero has been one of several names linked to Benn, who arrived fresh from his Fight of The Year success with Chris Eubank Jr. on Friday.
The first bout of the pair's duology was handed the accolade at The Ring Awards earlier this week, with both men paying tribute to one another as they accepted it together.
Benn is currently anticipated to be the mandatory challenger for WBC champion Mario Barrios or opponent Ryan Garcia, with the latter pair due to meet next month on DAZN.
But the Briton is keeping his options open, asking Romero on Friday if the pair were "doing it or not", to which the latter replied: "You know we're going to figure it out."
