Gomez Jr. halts McGregor in ill-tempered affair

Michael Gomez Jr. triumphed over Lee McGregor in a frequently rancorous lightweight clash to hand his foe a second loss in three bouts.

The Lancashire fighter dropped the Scotsman in the fourth round before a sustained succession of sixth-round blows saw the towel thrown.

On the day his beloved Hearts lost an agonising Scottish Premiership title race to Celtic, this was further pain for Jam Tarts fan McGregor.

His defeat, just under a year on from a brutal loss to Nathaniel Collins, marks another hammer blow to his world title aspirations going forward.

Gomez Jr. - who headbutted his opponent in a testy exchange before the opening bell - showed his own hopes remain firmly on track though.

The star will hope to parlay his success towards opportunities for major belts, including a possible crack at the British title later on this year.

O'Doherty defends Lonsdale Belt against Hatim

Louie O'Doherty added the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title to his British crown after outpointing Ahmed Hatim over a dozen rounds.

The Lonsdale Belt holder steadily outworked and outlanded his unbeaten foe to take a 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110 unanimous decision.

O'Doherty, who captured the former domestic title against Regan Glackin last October, has been forced to wait for his first defence until now.

But he made the most of his moment against the sturdy Hatim, putting his own chin on the line multiple times to ratchet up the pressure too.

His foe will be left to rue the earlier exchanges, where he appeared to have the edge in power, before his output flagged at the crucial moments.

O'Doherty will undoubtedly turn his attention towards further defences at British level, with perhaps an eye to a world-stage move later in 2026.

Paris 2024 star Muydinkhujaev sees off Torres

Decorated amateur star Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev maintained his perfect professional record with an early win over Alexis Nahuel Torres.

But the Uzbekistan fighter, a Paris 2024 gold-medal victor, found it hard to dispatch the stubborn Argentine despite a wide 60-54 scorecard.

Muydinkhujaev, tipped by many to translate his superb success in the unpaid ranks into a sturdy pro career, comfortably outworked his foe.

With half-a-dozen further rounds under his belt too, the star and his team will feel their trip to South Yorkshire offered invaluable experience.

Yet Torres, a journeyman with more losses than wins on his record, proved more adept than many perhaps expected him to be in the ring.

Now 2-0, Muydinkhujaev will hope to impress further on his next outing, amid a busy welterweight division currently filled with top operators.
