Deontay Wilder is confident that a fight with MMA superstar Francis Ngannou will happen in the not too distant future.

The former WBC heavyweight champion will finally return to the ring on June 27, 12 months after his last fight, and face Tyrrell Anthony Herndon.

30% discount sale: UK customers buy a DAZN annual subscription for just £83.99 (from £119.99) to watch over 185 fights per year. That's just £1.61 per week.

This contest follows Wilder's knockout loss to Zhilei Zhang in Riyadh which led to calls from some for 'The Bronze Bomber' to retire.

Ever since making his boxing debut in October 2023 against Tyson Fury, Ngannou, who was once the UFC's heavyweight champion, has often been linked with a showdown against Wilder.

This dream fight has often been talked about as a result of both men possessing explosive punching power, and while Wilder is about to start rebuilding his career following two successive losses, he is confident that a fight with Ngannou will happen sooner rather than later.

"I don’t know how much I can say, me and Francis, that fight still comes up, it came up two more times not too long ago," Wilder told DAZN's Ariel x Ade: The Boxing Show

"We’re just trying to figure out how we want the segment to go with me and Ngannou. I’m definitely interested; he is as well.

"I guess it’s just a matter of time, time is always the matter, and then when you execute that you always get a place and a date, and then you can start the promotion.

"I think that’s something that’s looking to be created, something that is looking to be done.

"People are going to look forward to that, I’m going to look forward to that. Stay tuned."

Ngannou is yet to announce his next move in the combat sports world with his last outing being his long awaited return to MMA last October.

On that night in Riyadh, Ngannou made his PFL debut and beat 2023 heavyweight champion Renan Ferreira to become the PFL Super Fights heavyweight champion
