Eddie Hearn names the major fighter he thinks is only fighting for money

Devin Haney will aim to become welterweight champion in November when he faces a stern test against current WBO ruler, Brian Norman

In the last 18 months, Haney, a former undisputed lightweight champion, has had to endure a lot in boxing and he has seen his stock take a brief battering.

Last year, Haney was dropped three times by Ryan Garcia in one of the year’s biggest fights and was beaten badly before losing on the scorecards

In the aftermath of the fight, it emerged Garcia had failed a drug test, and the result was later changed to a ‘No Contest’ which meant Haney preserved his unbeaten record.

DAZN - Home of Boxing

Earlier this year, Haney returned to action on a huge show in New York’s Times Square, and although he got past Jose Ramirez , the fight was widely criticised for its lack of action.

Eddie Hearn, Haney’s former promoter, now believes his former charge, and his father Bill, are fighting for money rather than world titles and legacy.

“What’s happened now is Bill [Haney] and Devin, they’re not looking strategically. They’re looking for the bag. That’s it,” said Hearn when speaking to Australian Boxing Central

So, they’re like, ‘Where can we make our $5, 6, 7 million? What fight?’ That’s why they said, ‘We’ll fight ‘Boots’ [Ennis] at 147. Well, we’re not going up, but we’ll fight you at 150. Ah, we’ll fight Teofimo [Lopez]. We’ll fight Brian Norman.’ Well, because they just want the money. They just want the money. They don’t care now.”

“Bill was a lot more selective and tactical about who to fight. Now, he just wants the money. That’s [Norman Jr.] still a good fight. It’s not all about money. If he beats Brian Norman, he becomes a three-division world champion, which is a great achievement. But in my opinion, the Haneys are looking at the selection and looking at money rather than legacy. They still care, but not in the same way.”
