DAZN News Panel: Can Eubank Jr. or Benn become a world champion in 2026?

DAZN
Eubank Jr. vs Benn 2 - only on DAZN PPV - Saturday

Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn's fights in 2025 are proving to be two of the very biggest in world boxing, not just this year but in recent memory.

The buzz, the column inches, the social media obsession, the TV airtime, particularly in the UK, has been unmatched by many other fights and fighters is the last few years.

It is a rivalry that has caught the public's imagination. Yet, there is no world title on the line here. Once Saturday night's victor is declared in London, live and exclusive on DAZN PPV,  there will be no coronation of a divisional champion. This makes the hype and obsession with these contests even more fascinating.

However, while titles are not on the line this time around, both Eubank Jr. and Benn know victory over their bitter rival will catapult them towards a world championship opportunity in 2026. For the defeated, it will be a major set back to those aspirations.

Do either have the ability to make that next step and actually become a world champion in 2026? DAZN News's boxing experts have been weighing up that very issue.

I would not be surprised if both men are involved in world title fights in 2026, but it will likely be Benn who will have a belt around his waist instead of Eubank Jr.

Benn, who appears to be moving back down to welterweight after Saturday’s rematch, is being steered towards WBC champion Mario Barrios who looked poor in his draw with the 46-year-old Manny Pacquiao, and Benn’s front foot, aggressive style can cause all sorts of problems for the American.

Eubank Jr. on the other hand faces tougher tests if he is to finally become a world champion. Both the middleweight and super middleweight divisions have dangerous operators.

Erislandy Lara and Janibek Alimkhanuly at middleweight are impressive talents, while we all know what undisputed super middleweight champion Terence Crawford can bring to the table.

So, if Eubank Jr. happens to share the ring with some of the names mentioned, he will start as a significant underdog.

Yes, and that man, regardless of Saturday's result, will be Conor Benn.

147lbs is slowly getting back on its feet after a few barren years, but Lewis Crocker and Mario Barrios are two world champions who Benn would start a significant favourite over.

For Eubank Jr, super-middleweight, his likely destination, currently has Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, and with Diego Pacheco and Hamzah Sheeraz leading the charge as contenders, his path to a belt could be more arduous.

Eubank will not become a world champion but there is a path for Benn winning a title. Benn has been saying for quite some time that he wants to fight for Mario Barrios' WBC welterweight crown.

An impactful win in this rematch against Eubank and Benn could catapult himself to just that opportunity in what would be a winnable fight.

I’m not sure Eubank will do because he will most likely head to super middleweight again and there are too many young, hungry fighters for him at 168lb right now.

However, Benn has a much better chance of doing so if he can still make 147lb. Newly-crowned IBF champion Lewis Crocker has been touted as a possible opponent for Benn and that is not only highly marketable in the UK, but it is also a very winnable one for Benn.

As is Mario Barrios, who has also been mentioned as a possible foe for Benn and he was very lucky to escape with a draw against an ageing Manny Pacquiao in July.

Title opportunities await both Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn if they pull through this rematch with the victory - but it is only the latter who realistically has a chance of a major belt before 2026 is up.

A return to welterweight has been long-mooted for 'The Destroyer', and talk of a major domestic dust-up with Lewis Crocker for the IBF title appears likely if he comes up trumps at Tottenham on Saturday.

Even then, defeat would likely leave him only a ranking bout away from a shot. Conversely, with Terence Crawford holding all the belts at super-middleweight, it feels a tougher sell for Eubank Jr. to get a chance.
