Barry Jones is today known as one of the most authoritative voices in boxing , but the former world champion was once a frequent star on numerous high profile shows.
One of those events he featured on was the second Chris Eubank Jr vs Nigel Benn fight that took place at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, in 1993 .
Jones, then still developing as a professional, was handed the opportunity at the last minute and he made his presence felt on the show when he defeated John White over four rounds to move to 6-0. Another victory one his way to winning a world title.
For Jones, it was business as usual, but the fight did not arrive until the last moment, and it came to him when he was dealing with a setback.
The weekend before the eagerly anticipated rematch, another huge battle was taking place as Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno collided for heavyweight glory in Cardiff.
Being a Welshman who could shift tickets, Jones was expecting to make an appearance on the card, but instead, it would be Joe Calzaghe’s debut that would be the highlight of the undercard.
“I remember it so well because the week before I was having curry and chips from in a rugby club from a polystyrene tray,” reflects Jones when speaking exclusively to DAZN News .
“I was watching Bruno vs Lewis on the screen, and I was sulking because I wasn’t on the show because I was undefeated and a big ticket seller.
“On the Sunday morning, I got a call from my trainer, not asking me but telling me, I was fighting on the undercard at Old Trafford.
“I boxed out my skin and I remember the atmosphere being fantastic. I boxed well and beat another unbeaten fighter from the same gym as Robin Reid on six days' notice.
