Joe Cordina looks set to sign a new two-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn.

Cordina has not fought since he suffered his first loss and forfeited his IBF super featherweight title to Anthony Cacace over a year ago, which also saw his promotional agreement with Matchroom come to an end.

Speaking to BoxingScene, the Welshman explained how he felt uncertainty around his career and now feels back on track, having had an overdue meeting with Eddie Hearn.

Cordina said: I [recently] linked up with Eddie [Hearn]. We’re on the same page – back on track to get me a fight – and we’ll have an announcement in the next few days.

He continued: “It’ll be a two-fight deal. At this sort of level, that’s all you really want because things can change very quickly. You’re potentially one fight, at this level, away from being in a title fight. It’s not as if I’m a prospect anymore, when you need a five- or six- or eight-fight deal. It’s a two-fight deal, and we’re working towards the bigger fights.”

It is expected that Cordina will return at lightweight, a division brimming with talent. Fights with Shakur Stevenson, Sam Noakes or William Zepeda could be on the cards for Cordina after making his return.

The former IBF super featherweight champion had a fight with Stevenson scheduled in October 2024, but the American pulled out due to injury.

Cordina said he does not want an easy fight for his comeback because he thrives on the uncertainty of fighting someone on your level

Cordina said: “[My next fight will] be soon. I want someone with a winning record. I want to still have that fear factor where someone could cause an upset – it makes me switch on. It’s gonna be someone of a certain level.”

He added on his meeting with Hearn: “[Hearn] was like, ‘I’ve been waiting for you to ring me,’ and I was like, ‘F**king hell – I should have rung earlier.’ I was waiting for a fight date. I went and met him – it’s always better to speak face to face – at the Johnny Fisher and Dave Allen [rematch] press conference, and it’s gone from there. We’ve been moving forward. We should have some news in the coming days.”
