Already a two-weight world champion, Mikaela Mayer seeks to rule over a third division.
She will have to attempt that conquest in hostile territory as Mayer challenges WBA super welterweight world champion and Canadian fighter Mary Spencer on Thursday at Montreal Casino in Montreal, Canada.
The vacant WBC and WBO titles will also be up for grabs in this fight, meaning the winner could be one strap away from undisputed glory in the division by the night’s end.
Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) used her vast skills to deliver a unanimous decision over Sandy Ryan in their March rematch to retain her WBO welterweight world title. Meanwhile, Spencer produced a unanimous decision of her own over Ogleidis Suarez in April in defense of her WBA super welterweight crown.
Will Mayer use her sweet science skills to begin her reign as a three-division queen? Or will Spencer get the best of the American and hoist three titles in front of the Canadian crowd?
DAZN News analyzes who has the edge between Mayer and Spencer entering this pivotal battle.
In her series with Sandy Ryan, Mayer demonstrated how potent she can be by being the first to the punch, especially in their rematch earlier this year.
Working behind a disciplined guard and hitting Ryan first with the jab empowered Mayer to reach deeper into her bag where every punch is at her disposal.
At her best, Mayer pounds the body and works her way up, slashing right hooks around opponents’ guards and across their jaws.
That style, comfortable on the outside or in the pocket alike, will be up against another orthodox fighter in boxer-puncher Mary Spencer.
Spencer is comfortable in the phone booth, too, and precise landing with right and left hooks that she sits on and leverages for max impact.
That makes this clash of styles close and intriguing with the slight edge going to Mayer due to the American’s ability to constantly make superb adjustments as needed.
Mayer counts five knockout victories to her name and Spencer touts six, though the WBA super welterweight titleholder is seasoned boxing at this weight. Will Mayer’s power transition up well in a new division? While it is certainly possible, until proven, the power nod goes to Spencer.
There is something to be said about daring to be greater. Mayer could not get the undisputed championship fight against Lauren Price at 147 pounds so she is moving up to super welterweight in hopes of achieving that glory here.
That shows supreme confidence in her own abilities.
Although Spencer is the champion in this bout, she is installed as the underdog on her home soil and Mayer’s electric style is what gave her that designation.
Despite entering a new division, Mayer has the world class experience to get the slight advantage here as well.
Mikaela Mayer said it aloud for anyone willing to listen during the final fight press conference:
"There are lots of big fights ahead of me, but the number one goal right now is to put on a great performance, show everyone that even though I'm the smaller fighter, skills pay the bills. Size doesn't win fights, skill does."
Spencer stands a couple of inches over Mayer and is more settled at super welterweight but the American is unfazed by both.
DAZN News gives her the 2-1 edge entering this championship bout and her versatile sweet science skills are the main reason why.
