Since Terence Crawford’s impressive win over Canelo Alvarez earlier this month, comparisons have been made to former fighters from the past with Crawford's legacy receiving an almighty boost.

One of those ex-boxers is Floyd Mayweather, another rival of Canelo's and the first man to beat the Mexican when they clashed in 2013.

Mayweather exited the sport of boxing in 2017 after defeating Conor McGregor to move to 50-0, and he finished his career unbeaten as well as beating several major names.

One of those fighters was Oscar De La Hoya when they collided in 2007, with Mayweather being pushed all the way before winning via split decision.

De La Hoya retired the following year, but he continued to watch Mayweather up close as he promoted several of his contests.

The six-weight world champion is still involved in boxing today as the head of Golden Boy Promotions and after watching Crawford's most recent win, De La Hoya still believes Mayweather is the better boxer.

“Floyd Mayweather literally toyed with Canelo Alvarez,” said De La Hoya when speaking to  FightHype . “Like, he literally toyed with him. He didn’t get hit at all. Not one time.

“Crawford, yeah, he’s more of a boxer-fighter. Mayweather is more of a boxer. But I have to disagree. I think that Mayweather is much more superior to Crawford. Not just because he beat me, it was a close fight or whatever. I really feel that technically, Mayweather is the better fighter.”
