Filip Hrgovic’s reward for beating Dave Allen this weekend could be a huge showdown with Moses Itauma on August 8 at London’s O2 Arena.
Sources have informed DAZN News that Hrgovic is being considered to be Itauma’s next opponent, but only if he can get past Allen on Saturday night, live only on DAZN, in a heavyweight bout that now brings major jeopardy for the tough Croatian.
Earlier this year, Itauma returned from injury to register another impressive stoppage when he became the first man to stop Jermaine Franklin as he halted the durable American in the fifth session after dominating from the opening bell.
The attention immediately shifted to who would be Itauma’s next opponent, with several big names linked including current WBA regular champion, Murat Gassiev, and former unified ruler, Andy Ruiz.
Instead, Hrgovic is the top option to be the next man to challenge the man many believe is the future of boxing, but his main focus for now is Allen in Doncaster.
If Allen can somehow cause an upset, then Hrgovic’s major opportunity against Itauma will be gone and Allen may even increase his chances of being the man in the opposite corner to the 20-year-old this summer.
Saturday night’s fight already contained plenty of interest and the stakes have just got even higher with a massive showdown against Itauma the incentive for Hrgovic.
Hrgovic possesses a reputation as one of the toughest campaigners at heavyweight and his only loss came at the hands of the doctors when facing Daniel Dubois in 2024.
Since that defeat, Hrgovic has rebounded well with solid wins over Joe Joyce and David Adelye, but is that ample preparation for a fight with Itauma?
Hrgovic will bring plenty of experience, both amateur and professional, but providing Frank Warren’s potential superstar with much-needed rounds is arguably the reason he has been selected.
Itauma is expected to be amongst the heavyweight title mix this time next year and if he is to register success against the likes of Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Dubois, miles in the tank will be necessary as his incredible knockout streak surely can’t go on.
If he is able to stop Hrgovic with the same brutality he moved past Franklin and Dillian Whyte, getting Itauma rounds is going to be problematic.
Oleksandr Usyk puts his unbeaten record on the line against Rico Verhoeven on Saturday, May 23, in front of the Egyptian pyramids, live and exclusive on DAZN. Buy as a one-off PPV or included, along with Zayas vs. Ennis (June 27) PPV, with a DAZN Ultimate Tier subscription.
