Naoya Inoue and Junto Nakatani will meet in a Tokyo Dome mega-bout this May according to Ring Magazine's Mike Coppinger, as 'The Monster' defends his undisputed super-bantamweight title on home soil.
The Japanese pair, widely considered the leading homegrown fighters of the last decade, have long been linked to a major domestic encounter in the capital city.
Now, they will headline what is set to be one of the biggest nights in local boxing history at the famed indoor baseball stadium on Saturday, May 2 in a super-fight.
Inoue, a four-weight world champion who has held undisputed status in two divisions, most recently dismantled Alan Picasso at The Ring V: Night of the Samurai.
Nakatani, making the move from bantamweight on the undercard, conversely laboured for stretches against Sebastian Hernandez, even as he swept the scorecards.
Nevertheless, with several extra months to prepare for their Golden Week clash, the Mie native will hope to match his rival, having conquered three divisions himself.
With 32-0 professional records to their names, both Inoue and Nakatani will arrive knowing one of them will likely suffer their first career reverse as a professional.
The former will arrive as the heavy favourite to defend his crown, in what could also prove to be his final bout at super-bantamweight before pursuing a fifth division too.
Few sports outstrip the love that Japan has for sumo and baseball - but in Naoya Inoue and Junto Nakatani, the country has two stars to love and celebrate.
Now, the foremost leading lights for Japanese boxing on the world stage will return home after December's trip to Saudi Arabia for a mouthwatering face-off.
Inoue, with his undisputed super-bantamweight crown in tow, will look to make yet another successful defence against one of the biggest threats to his crown.
Nakatani though will be confident he can become the first man to tame 'The Monster', even as he struggled to adapt to his new weight class last time out.
Tokyo Dome has seen its share of sensational sporting history down the years. Now, this palace looks set to play host to a modern Japanese classic written in legend.
