Paul vs Chavez Jr - Saturday on DAZN PPV - Buy now

Oscar De La Hoya will be a keen spectator this weekend when Jake Paul collides with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The former six weight world champion is proud of his Mexican heritage, and he will be supporting Chavez Jr in his battle with Paul

Elsewhere, Zurdo Ramirez, who is guided by De La Hoya, will look to defend his world cruiserweight titles against Yuniel Dorticos.

De La Hoya knows all about world title fights and DAZN News is looking back at when he fought five times in 1997

Miguel Angel Gonzalez – January 1997

Despite fighting five times in 1997, Oscar De La Hoya had been inactive for seven months when he stepped into the ring with Miguel Angel Gonzalez.

The summer of 1996 had seen De La Hoya become only the second man to defeat Julio Cesar Chavez as he stopped the Mexican legend in four rounds, and he was about to cash in on his major popularity.

Against another Mexican, De La Hoya was too good as he dominated the contest for large portions to take a wide points decision on the scorecards.

Pernell Whittaker – April 1997

De La Hoya’s leap to welterweight saw him face another legend of the game as he was opposed by the brilliant Pernell Whittaker.

The defensive master had seen better days, but his experience was a huge asset in this fight as he made De La Hoya think throughout before losing narrowly according to the ringside judges.

Some believed Whittaker had done enough, but De La Hoya’s constant pressure ensured it was a fair result.

David Kamau – June 1997

If going the 12 round distance was looking to become a theme for the 1997 version of De La Hoya, he dramatically altered that when he made the first defence of his welterweight crown against David Kamau in Texas.

De La Hoya was in no mood to hang around against the tough Kenyan and he got the job done in two one-sided rounds.

Hector Camacho - September 1997

De La Hoya was no stranger to standing against faded legends and he welcomed another one to Las Vegas in the shape of Hector Camacho.

The Puerto Rican star was a former world champion who had shared the ring with past and future rivals of De La Hoya in Chavez and Felix Trinidad.

A solid measuring stick, Camacho promised a good fight, but he was unable to put a dent in De La Hoya as he was dropped in the ninth round before losing on points.

Wilfredo Rivera – December 1997

With the legendary Gil Clancy in his corner for the first time after splitting from Manny Steward, De La Hoya delivered his best performance of the year against the brave Wilfredo Rivera.

De La Hoya hurt the Puerto Rican on several occasions and with Rivera cut and absorbing serious punishment, he was finally rescued in the eighth session.
