Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney will fight on May 2, albeit not against each other.

Garcia and Haney will be facing Rolando Romero and Jose Ramirez respectively on a fight card which will take place in New York's Times Square.

If Garcia and Haney manage to beat their opponents at the start of May, then it is expected the two will meet in a rematch of their April 2024 contest later this year.

The build-up to the first fight was overshadowed by Garcia's crazy behaviour which included deliberately missing weight for the WBC super lightweight title contest.

Come fight night, Garcia shocked the boxing world, knocking down Haney three times before being declared the winner by majority decision.

This result has since been ruled a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for a PED the day before and on fight night.

It looks like this year is a reset for Garcia as he looks to re-assert himself as one of boxing's biggest stars, but some fans will be disappointed not to see him face Haney in the immediate future.

When appearing on DAZN's Ariel x Ade: The Boxing Show, Garcia's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, explained why a rematch between 'King Ry' and Haney is not taking place in Times Square, citing that it's Haney who needs to see if he is still able to compete at the highest level after a long layoff.

"Devin Haney does not want to come back against Ryan Garcia after getting knocked out," De La Hoya said.

"It’s just not in the manual of promoting fights, or in the fighters’ manual where if you get knocked out, you fight the same guy again,

"You must have an in-between fight to get your confidence back, for Devin to make sure he’s okay.

"What happens if Ramirez pops him with a shot, he wobbles and gets knocked out. That can happen. It would be a disaster.

"I think Devin wanted to test the waters against Ramirez thinking that Ramirez is not dangerous, but guess what, he is dangerous."
