'He's shell shocked' - Ryan Garcia begins the mind games with Rolando 'Rolly' Romero

'He's shell shocked' - Ryan Garcia begins the mind games with Rolando 'Rolly' RomeroMelina Pizano/Matchroom

Ryan Garcia has claimed that his next opponent, Rolando 'Rolly' Romero, is only taking this fight for a big pay day.

Garcia and Romero will headline a historic card on May 2, live on DAZN PPV worldwide, which will take place in New York's Times Square.

This will be Garcia's first fight since beating Devin Haney last year, and if he gets past Romero, it is expected that Garcia will face Haney for a second time.

The former undisputed lightweight champion is also set to feature on the same card against Jose Ramirez, where a win will also put him on a collision course with 'King Ry'.

Compared to previous build-ups to fights involving Garcia, this one has been fairly subdued with Romero offering little when it comes to the trash talking many fight fans crave.

Reflecting on Monday's Los Angeles press conference, Garcia reiterated that he is just focused on getting the knockout and setting up the eagerly-anticipated rematch with Haney.

"I think he’s a little shellshocked, when somebody is in front of you, it’s hard to talk s—t," Garcia told DAZN before explaining why Romero is showing signs that he is only showing up for the paycheck.

"I think that’s what it is, he’s a deer caught in the headlights right now, and when I’m looking at him, he doesn’t want to engage in anything.

"Right here, I’m just trying to do my job, make a statement, knock him out, and give the fans what they really want, that rematch."

WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez is also set to appear on the bill, facing mandatory challenger Arnold Barboza Jr, and their rivarly is intensifying after Lopez slapped Barboza during their face off in the City of Angels.
