When Ryan Garner entered boxing, the goal was to become a world champion. Now, he's going to get the chance to fulfill the dream.
On Friday, it was announced by Queensberry Promotions that Garner will battle Michael Magnesi for the interim WBC super featherweight championship on Saturday, June 20, on the pitch at St Mary’s, home of Southampton FC in Southampton, England, live on DAZN.
In his last time out, Garner (19-0, 10 KOs) scored a third-round stoppage win over Cristian Bielma on the Moses Itauma-Jermaine Franklin undercard at the end of March. Now, Garner returns home in quest of championship glory.
“This has been my dream all along, and now it is coming true," Garner said in a statement. "Frank (Warren) promised me he would make it happen, and he has always delivered for me right from the beginning.
“I believe this will be one of the biggest single sporting events ever to take place in the city, and I know that I’ve got the Southampton people behind me. It will just be an amazing occasion, but I have got a job to do against a tough opponent, so I can make sure we can do this again and again.
“I am thrilled that we are sticking to the WBC title and, when I win this one, the champion will have no place to hide.”
Magnesi (26-2, 13 KOs) last fought at the end of February when he secured a decision win against Marcos Gabriel Martinez. The Italian gets the opportunity of a lifetime but he'll have to beat the hometown favorite to get WBC gold.
The WBO world heavyweight title is on the line for Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois on May 9, only on DAZN PPV. Buy as a one-off PPV or included, along with Usyk vs Verhoeven (May 23), with a DAZN Ultimate Tier subscription.
