NEW YORK — After producing his biggest win to date in a brilliant near shutout of Teofimo Lopez Jr., Shakur Stevenson did not waste time setting his sights on a possible next opponent. In fact, he just had to look ringside in Madison Square Garden.
“There's a fighter in here right now, and he motivated me too. Where's Conor Benn?” Stevenson, the new WBO and The Ring super lightweight world champion said live on the Ring VI card on DAZN PPV. “Hey Conor Benn, we can get it banging, boy. We can get it banging!”
Stevenson added: “I want that same rehydration clause that you put on [Chris] Eubank Jr. and I want a fight.”
Having already experienced a tense exchange with Rolando Romero earlier in the night, Benn made a beeline right into the ring to confront Stevenson and let him know his call out was not wise.
“You're too small for me,” Benn told the undefeated Stevenson. “You're tiny, you're tiny. You can't punch. You can't keep me off of you. I'll rough you up.”
Undeterred and brimming with confidence, Stevenson said, “sign the contract. Let's make it happen.
“Eddie [Hearn],” he shouted over to his Matchroom Boxing promoter, “I want him, he’s food.”
Benn (24-1, 14 KOs) is coming off a redeeming, dominant victory over Chris Eubank Jr. in their November rematch.
