The boxing world suffered a tragedy as Japanese star Shigetoshi Kotari has passed away at the age of 28.

After going to a 12-round split draw with Yamato Hata in a WBO lightweight title fight on Saturday, Aug. 2, at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Kotari collapsed and became unconscious. He was transported to the hospital for a brain bleed. The Japan Boxing Commission wrote in a press release that Kotari underwent a craniotomy, which is a surgery that removes part of the skull, oftenĀ to relieve pressure on or treat a brain injury.Ā But that wasn't enough to save Kotari's life.Ā

The WBO took to X to offer their condolences.Ā
