Sam Jones knows all about Daniel Dubois.
The outspoken manager, currently guiding numerous top-level fighters, has been very vocal regarding the current IBF heavyweight champion in the past when Dubois was getting ready to face Joe Joyce five years ago.
At the height of lockdown, with the world gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic, Joyce and Dubois met with the winner being fancied to push on and challenge for a world title.
Joyce was the victor that night, but it is Dubois who has pushed on to become heavyweight champion and he will be headlining Wembley Stadium this weekend, live on DAZN PPV, when he faces Oleksandr Usyk for a second time.
In his role as Joyce’s manager, Jones guided him to the business end of the heavyweight division, but the 2016 Olympic silver medalist was unable to find another gear and his run at the top was brought to an end with numerous defeats against the likes of Zhilei Zhang and Derek Chisora.
In that time, Dubois has put together an impressive streak and he is now on the verge of becoming undisputed champion.
The popular Londoner has a lot to do against Usyk after being stopped by the mercurial Ukrainian in 2023, but many within the boxing community hold a belief that he can get the job done.
Jones, who will be ringside at Wembley as he watches Aadam Hamed in his sixth pro fight, has been impressed by Dubois’ resurgence, but does he think it will be good enough on Saturday night?
“How can you not be happy for Daniel after what he’s been through in his career?” said Jones when speaking exclusively to DAZN News.
“So many people have said he was finished, even I had some doubts, but here he is at Wembley Stadium with the chance to win all four belts.
“Can he do it? Of course he can. He has the power, and he needs to make that known in the early stages before Usyk gets comfortable.
“I give him a decent chance. A better chance than the first fight. But this is Usyk, and I think he will just find a way to win like he always does.”
Watch Usyk versus Dubois 2 live and exclusive on DAZN PPV this Saturday - July 19 - for £24.99 UK; $59.99 US; $19.99/equivalent ROW.
