Al Ahly and Inter Miami have the honour of kicking off the new FIFA Club World Cup at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The game marks a huge test for Lionel Messi and Co against a club who have dominated African football in recent years. Inter Miami are relying on their core group of players for the global showpiece, only bringing in reserve goalkeeper William Yarbrough in the recent transfer window. Their biggest injury concern is left-back Jordi Alba, who was missing from training on Friday.
For Al Ahly, the game will mark a baptism of fire for Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who was brought into the club just last month. Nicknamed The Professor, Riveiro arrived in Cairo off the back of three successful seasons in South Africa, where he led Orlando Pirates to a pair of Nedbank Cup triumphs and a trio of MTN8 titles.
The Egyptian team have been in South Florida for more than a week. They warmed up for the Club World Cup with a friendly against Mexican team CF Pachuca on Sunday, losing 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
"It’s an interesting competition. Having the chance to be part of it is exciting. The expectations I have are different to the ones I had when I played for other teams, but I’m eager and I look forward to competing against the best (teams) and doing well."
Inter Miami player Lionel Messi
"The game plan is clearly to try to be the protagonists, to try to prevent their best players from taking centre stage in the game and minimize all their positive aspects so that we can be the ones who carry the weight of the game and have a chance and get a good result in our debut."
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano
"Obviously, we're close to the moment, expectations are gathering and focusing on what's next, finalizing preparations for the match. We're looking forward to the match and being on the field tomorrow with the feeling that we'll be ready."
Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro
