Alexander Isak was noticeably absent from Newcastle United's 1-0 loss at Arsenal on Sunday, a result that ensured that the Magpies could finish no higher than third in the Premier League this season.

Isak is Newcastle's leading goalscorer and is second in the Premier League Golden Boot Race this season after finishing third in 2023-24, making his importance to his club obvious.

With the Magpies not yet assured of Champions League football next season, getting Isak back on the pitch is of paramount importance to the club. After Sunday's match, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe provided an update on the Sweden international's outlook ahead of the final matchday of the season.

"I don't know. It's too early to make an assessment, I think he has a chance [to return for Newcastle's match against Everton on May 25]," Howe told Sky Sports.

"He had a scan this morning, felt a bit of stiffness last night, didn't feel anything during training.

"The scan showed some swelling so we took him out of the game and hopefully he can be ready for next week."

Howe later told the BBC that Isak's swelling was "in a muscle in his groin."
