How Arbeloa has got Madrid's stars shining again
It is tempting, given how it started, to treat Alvaro Arbeloa’s stint at Real Madrid as little more than a holding pattern. A former player, an interim solution, a steady hand until the summer brings something shinier. That narrative lasted roughly as long as his first week in the job.
Since then, something rather more interesting has taken shape.
The early chaos – typified by that Copa del Rey humiliation – now feels like a necessary rupture rather than a defining failure. Arbeloa inherited a side drifting between identities under Xabi Alonso, and rather than overcomplicate things, he has done the most un-Madrid thing imaginable: simplified. As Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge put it this week, he has “found the right formula again”.
That “formula” is not revolutionary. It is, in fact, aggressively traditional. Madrid are once again a team built on transitions, verticality and elite individuals being placed in positions where they can decide games. The difference is that those individuals now look liberated rather than burdened.
Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior have become the twin engines of that revival. Between them, they have powered Madrid’s Champions League charge, with Mbappe racking up 13 goals and Vinicius contributing heavily in both goals and assists in Europe this season. Behind them, Federico Valverde and Arda Guler provide thrust and invention, while the structure around them looks notably less fragile than it did in January.
Results have followed. Madrid swept aside Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the last 16, a statement victory that felt like a line being drawn under the uncertainty of the winter months. Domestically, too, the wins have stacked up, with high-scoring performances and late-game resilience hinting at a group rediscovering its edge.
And yet, for all the improvement, everything now bends towards what comes next.

Bayern Munich await in the quarter-finals, a tie that feels less like a hurdle and more like a referendum. Bayern arrive in ferocious form, having dismantled Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate and boasting superior defensive and attacking numbers in Europe this season. This is, by any reasonable measure, the most complete side left in the competition.
For Arbeloa, that is both the problem and the opportunity. Madrid have not lost in weeks and are scoring freely, but Bayern represent a different order of challenge – one that will test whether this resurgence is cosmetic or real.
The subtext is unavoidable. Beat Bayern, and the “interim” tag likely dissolves into something permanent. Fall short, and the summer reset returns to the agenda.
For now, though, Arbeloa has done what few expected: he has made Real Madrid feel like Real Madrid again. In this competition, that alone makes them dangerous.
