Group C kicks off with European heavyweights Bayern München taking on Oceania kings Auckland City. Both clubs secured their participation at the tournament via the ranking pathway following consistently impressive showings over the four-year cycle from 2021 to 2024. During that time, Bayern made at least the quarter-finals in every edition of the UEFA Champions League while Auckland dominated the OFC Champions League. The Navy Blues recently wrapped up another continental title, making it four straight victories, and 11 titles in the past 13 editions.
Bayern added defender Jonathan Tah and midfielder Tom Bischof as new signings in time for the Club World Cup. Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane will look to win one more trophy for the Bundesliga giants before leaving the club.
With head coach Paul Posa absent, Auckland City are led by assistant coach Ivan Vicelich. They concluded their Club World Cup preparations with a 1-0 friendly loss against UAE giants Al Ain FC in Alexandria, Virginia.
"It's a new format with the best teams in the world competing. I'm happy to be part of it because it's an exciting opportunity."
Bayern München player Harry Kane
“We’re preparing like we prepare for any other game. They’ve got some superstars, sure, but we do our analysis, we work hard on the grass, and we’re ready from minute one to minute 90.”
Auckland City vice-captain Adam Mitchell
"It's daunting, but the Kiwi attitude is very much the underdog on the global stage. We're going to work hard and hopefully leave the grounds with our heads held high."
Auckland City player Angus Kilkolly
