FC Bayern München arrive into this encounter knowing they have already punched their ticket to the knockout round. They were mightily impressive in a 10-0 victory against Auckland City FC before a narrow 2-1 win over CA Boca Juniors.
For Bayern, the path is pretty straightforward. Avoid defeat on Tuesday and their stay in Charlotte will continue through 28 June against the runners-up from Group D in the Round of 16. They'll fancy their chances given the form of Michael Olise, who has three goals, as does Jamal Musiala. The latter was an injury concern after leaving the match against Boca, but has resumed full training.
After a 2-2 draw with Boca and 6-0 defeat of Auckland City, SL Benfica still have work to do in order to reach the next phase. The good news for the Portuguese side is that a draw would secure second place in the group. A win against the German giants would also mean that Benfica capture the top spot and remain in Charlotte for the Round of 16.
Benfica can also reach the knockout round with a defeat and Boca do not defeat Auckland City. Another avenue would be if Boca beat Auckland City and Benfica finish above Boca on overall goal difference, or, if that is equal, overall number of goals scored, or, if that is equal, fair play ranking, or, if that is equal, the drawing of lots.
Both Alvaro Carreras and Andrea Belotti are unavailable through suspension.
These two sides met last November in the league phase of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, with Bayern winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Musiala.
"We played them before so it’s a team that we know really well. There are always two sides to these games we play against teams who are extremely dominant in their league, with high, high quality. I think [Evangelos] Pavlidis, [Angel] Di Maria, Kerem Akturkoglu, [Orkun] Kokcu and so on and so on. I can keep naming them. They're all players who can score goals. They're all players who are used to being killers in their leagues. And obviously, for them, when they play against teams like us, there's always this mix between sometimes adapting to the opponent and finding the balance between still continuing your way. So you see these games being not always as predictable because you're watching a lot of games from them where they're super dominant. But we have the same goal; we have the same ambition for this game."
Vincent Kompany, Bayern head coach
“It’s going to be a tough game, we played against them before earlier this season in the Champions League and it was a tough game and we expect the same [Tuesday]. We’ve been working well during this tournament, the coach has been pushing us, saying that we need to be more aggressive.”
Fredrik Aursnes, Benfica midfielder
“We always come in with the same mindset of winning, but we know it will be a hard game and it will be for our survival and I hope it will end well. Bayern are very good with the ball, so when we have the ball, we need to keep it a lot and make them run. I think we can be good with the ball and exploit some counter-attacks as well.”
Samuel Dahl, Benfica defender
MLS expansion franchise Charlotte FC have used Bank of America Stadium as their home ground since their opening season in 2022, with their debut match drawing a crowd in excess of 70,000. The venue is well versed in hosting soccer fixtures, with a number of international and club friendlies having been held here, in addition to Concacaf Gold Cup dates and two knockout games in the 2024 Copa America. NFL outfit Carolina Panthers have called the Charlotte venue home since 1996 and it has been used for several play-off matches.
