Bad tempered Group C affair ends all square between Boca Juniors and Benfica
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup saw its first red card of the tournament in a feisty Group C encounter between Boca Juniors and Benfica.
It was Boca who raced into a 2-0 lead in this encounter, thanks to goals from Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia inside half an hour, but were later pegged back by Bruno Lage's side.
First Angel Di Maria pulled one back on the stroke of half time with a contentious penalty, before Nicolas Otemendi equalised with six minutes to go.
However, both teams ended the game with ten men, after first Andrea Belotti was shown red for a high challenge and then Boca's Nicolas Figel got his marching orders for a late lunge. Substitute Ander Herrera was also shown a red card during an eventful game.
